PATCH – Support for the employment of people with intellectual disabilities
The PATCH (Place and Train for Cognitive Disabilities) project was created for people with mild or moderate intellectual disabilities who want to enter the open or partially protected labor market but need appropriate support. The aim of the project is to create conditions for their effective and sustainable professional integration through a modern “place and train” approach – i.e., “hire first, train later.”

As part of PATCH, we strive to:
- prepare vocational trainers (VET) to support mentors in the workplace (tutors, buddies, assistants) for people with intellectual disabilities—i.e., people who directly support these individuals in the workplace,
- develop a micro-certification system that will recognize and confirm the life and professional skills of people with cognitive difficulties,
- promote these solutions in the national vocational education systems of the project partners.
How will we achieve this?
As part of the project:
- creation of an online course (MOOC) for professional trainers who will prepare tutors/mentors in the workplace for their role,
- we will develop a standard training program for professional mentors,
- we will create a system for assessing and confirming skills based on micro-certificates,
- we will prepare recommendations for public institutions and entrepreneurs from the hotel and catering sector.
Why is this important?
In the European Union, as many as 1 in 4 adults have some form of disability, and many people with cognitive impairments face barriers to accessing or maintaining employment. Although there is increasing talk of activation and professional integration, there is a lack of specific tools and methods to support both employers and people with disabilities.
